Secrets to Great Tree Racing-christmas-tree

People are always after tuning tips, but a good tune will only get you so far in an online lobby. A good tree is essential if you want to start winning races. Here are some tips:

  • Reaction time. Unless you're high, everyone should generally have the same reaction time. Remember not to tense up before a ghost, be relaxed.
  • Button configuration. I dearly hope that you don't still use "O" for ebrake. You need to change the ebrake button to something that is easy for you to let go of. Some of the popular choices are L2, R2 and the Analog sticks.
  • Internet speed. Not much you can do about this without calling up your ISP. Here is a test you can take:

    Here is mine:

Anything under 1mbps Download speed is pretty poor. Once you get over about 10mbps, you don't see much of a difference. Now ping is what really matters. While download and upload speeds measure how much data you can send/receive, ping measures how fast you can do that (how fast you see the ghost). So the lower the better. Anything under 20 is amazing, once you go over 100, ghost lag will be pretty much inevitable. The good news is that you can call your ISP and raise your net speeds. Bad news is that there isn't really anything you can do to lower your ping.
  • Try my Port Forwarding tutorial.
  • Choose your ghost well. The closer the ghost is to your location, the better you will see him ghost. For example, if you're located in New York, odds are you will get a better tree with a ghost that is in DC than one that is in Australia.
  • Clear your PS3 Cache. Do this by going to Options>Scrolling down>Network Cache>Delete.
  • Restart your router/modem. Do this by unplugging them for 30 seconds, then plugging them back in.
  • Get a wired connection! Unless you absolutely have to connect via Wi-Fi, connect your PS3 to your router via an Ethernet cable.
  • Turn off all other devices that connect to the internet. PC's, iPhones, anything that is online. You want to have as much bandwidth available for your PS3 as possible.

Now go tree Thumbs Up

Mine never drops under 135. It's usually up over 1,000ms though.
